Devel AI Pilots Edge-Based Oil Spill Detection in Real-World Environments

Devel AI is taking its CNN-powered oil spill detection system from the lab to the field. Following its presentation at SPE Nigeria 2025, the team has begun pilot testing in collaboration with environmental partners across the Niger Delta and coastal region of Lagos.
The mobile app uses EfficientNet-Lite1 deep learning architecture and runs locally on smartphones — enabling real-time oil-spill alerts without the need for internet or expensive infrastructure.
“We wanted to build something scalable and practical,” says A.O. Bakare, Research Lead at Devel AI. “This is edge AI for environmental protection — bringing intelligence where it’s needed most.”
